Welcome to the Little Traverse Sailors Race Program
The LTS Race Program is designed for youth sailors ages 13 – 19 however, younger sailors may be admitted at the discretion of the coach and Program Directors. Acceptance into the Race Program is based on interest, prior sailing experience, and instructor evaluation. The Race Program experience will help young sailors learn better sailing and racing skills in a fun environment. Teamwork and sportsmanship are stressed in a supportive learning environment with coaches helping sailors set their individual sailing and racing goals. For those sailors to whom competition is not a goal the coaches are happy to adjust their goals to increase their ability to efficiently and effectively steer, trim sails, use their weight, etc. for optimum boat performance.
The team practices Monday through Friday afternoons June 2016 – August 2016 on the LTYC waterfront. It is our plan to travel to area and midwestern Regattas. On Tuesday nights and weekends, the coaching staff will work with Race Program members and local sailors to try to find crew spots for those interested in becoming a part of a big boat experience.
The program’s format is designed to provide comprehensive and intensive training focusing on specific sailing skill sets and sailing knowledge in a progressive curriculum (LTS skills sheets). Race Program members can expect to learn about boat tuning, boat speed, strategy and tactics, boat handling, racing rules, teamwork, sportsmanship, and respect for the game in order to enjoy and be successful on the race course. As the members develop skills for fleet racing there may be opportunities to introduce match racing and team racing skill sets.
The main goal is to provide a love of sailing and the confidence and knowledge for it to be a fulfilling lifetime sport – there is always more to learn!
